Primary sub-base
Graded 0/40mm sub-base to the Specification for Highway Works, delivered across Kent and South East London or collected from our Tonbridge yard.
MOT Type 1 is a crushed primary stone, usually limestone or granite, graded from 40mm down to dust. That mix of sizes is the point: the fines fill the gaps between the larger pieces, so once it is compacted it locks together and stops moving.
The name comes from the old Ministry of Transport specification. Today the material is covered by the Specification for Highway Works, and it is the default sub-base wherever a job has to be built to a standard rather than just built.
Sized from 40mm down to dust, so it compacts to a dense, locked together layer rather than staying loose.
Supplied to the Specification for Highway Works, which is what most councils, housebuilders and rail contracts ask for.

Type 1 wants to go down in layers, not all in one go. Around 100mm to 150mm at a time, each layer compacted with a whacker plate or a roller before the next one goes on. Dumping 300mm in and running over it once gives you a soft base that will settle later.
Depth depends on what is going on top and what is underneath. A footpath or patio might need 100mm. A car driveway is usually 150mm. Anything taking vans or lorries, or built over soft ground, wants more, and the sub-grade underneath may need digging out first.
If the job is domestic and the specification does not insist on primary stone, recycled crushed concrete will usually do the same job for less. We are happy to say which one we would use.

Around 100mm for a footpath or patio and 150mm for a car driveway, laid in layers of no more than 150mm and compacted between each one. Heavier traffic or soft ground needs more.
Roughly two tonnes covers 10 square metres at 100mm compacted. Send us the area and depth and we will work it out.
If a specification calls for primary Type 1, use Type 1. For most domestic driveways and patios, recycled crushed concrete does the same job for less money.
